How to Display Small Artwork in Your Home

 · IN: ART ART STYLING

You’ve likely heard the phrase “go big or go home”. When it comes to artwork though, bigger isn’t always better. The value and versatility of smaller pieces, either in a collection or one on its own, is sometimes underestimated. While there’s no question that large-scale art can command attention in a way that small works simply can’t, that type of bold impact is not necessarily what every room needs in order to feel complete. The intimacy of a smaller piece of art can attract eyes in an entirely different way, drawing the viewer in, extending an invitation to look closer. The result: an engaging space that’s rich in character and depth. When you take a layered approach to designing a room, there are a multitude of powerful ways to make use of small artwork. Pieces can be displayed on their own, or on a larger wall as part of an eclectic grouping in a gallery-style layout.

LITTLE ART DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN LITTLE IMPACT

Juxtasposing art of varying sizes and contrasting styles can be an effective way to achieve a look that is truly personal to you. Picture a wall that combines modern and traditional paintings that work together cohesively because they share common characteristics such as color or a theme. Variety in the type and size of art you choose to display can give your space a warm, collected feel that is reflective of your own distinctive style. Additionally, placing art outside the context where one would normally expect to see it, can add an element of whimsy and playful tension to a space. For instance, rather than hanging a single large painting that fills the wall space above a bed, why not consider putting up one, two or even a grouping of smaller works in that space? It’s worth a try. See how it makes the room feel. See how it makes you feel.

PLACES TO DISPLAY SMALLER ART

If you’re wondering how you might be able to incorporate some of these ideas into your home, here are a few areas where small framed art can really shine:

FROM AN ARTIST'S PERSPECTIVE...

While larger-scale work is definitely on the horizon for me, there will always be a place in my artistic practice for smaller pieces. There’s something special, almost meditative, about getting lost in the delicate details of a piece of art you can hold in your hand. Regardless of size though, I think the key here is to have fun and experiment with artwork that speaks to you. After all, if it’s meaningful in your eyes, it will almost certainly find a place in your home.
